Let’s suppose a Universal Basic Income (UBI) becomes law in the US, and mirroring
the wage gap women are paid less than men.
The various excuses why are hard to pin down, but stripped of
artifice the basic statement is, like in the case of the current wage gap,
“a woman’s life is worth less than a man’s life.”
At the time of its enactment this imagined UBI only passed by the bitterest of
margins -almost pure party line vote. And one of the demanded, and eventually given,
concessions was reduced pay to women.
Who demanded that concession? The GOP. Why? “Fiscal Responsibility.”
Who supported that demand? The Base. Why?
Because they’re fucking dumb and not on your side.
If we imagine a model based on the ACA legislation we get a very similar example.
No Single Payer system as a demand from the Right supported by The Base.
Why?
“…”
So really it is, imo, this simple: The Base is vocal, stupid, and reliable. As an ally their
tenacity and loyalty make them an enduring force for whatever they see as being a
moral imperative. But that same grudging, stubborn refusal to let anything go undone
also ends up meaning that any cause they are roused against will, at the minimum,
suffer with the most likely outcome being said cause being severely damaged.
They always vote, they aggressively complain, and they are ambitiously uninformed.
The Base is like the very tides; either you’re accounting for their power, or you risk
being swept away and losing everything.
That said if The Base isn’t a monoculture than it’s pretty close and that’s part of how
much power it has, but that’s a different topic for a different time.
If we keep fighting, we’ll keep losing and hardly make any progress. If we win over the base, we’ll WIN…an eternal status quo where nothing ever improves. These sparkly clouds never get it, do they?
Is there a way to just contain the shiny cloud? Cuz I was thinking another tank. But maybe just rounding the little turds with it.
Where’s Krombopulos Michael when you need him?
Oh right, dead. :C
That sparkly cloud does have a talent for pointing out unpleasant truths. If only it were better at suggesting solutions to the problems it brings up.
…and how, exactly, is The Base contributing to the wage gap, oh shiniest of clouds?
Or rather, how would winning it over help reduce the wage gap?
Hm.

Unsurprising that pure enlightenment is just as unpleasant to be around as pure slime. Superego and id both need mediation to achieve anything useful.
Don’t want to win it over? They shot it with a ray gun designed explicitly for that purpose. Didn’t work, but still.
