Yeah, because we men have been doin’ a bang-up job so far.
Lesse, two major world wars and dozens of smaller ones just in the last century.
Rampant racism, religious bigotry, and massive delusions of grandeur.
Incessant greed and avarice motivated by the mindless pursuit of fleeting positions of power and status to the detriment of all those around, and yet, in spite of all that, nobody has stopped to think that “maybe we’re doing this wrong.”
Men running shit, yeah we got this thing on lock. /rolleyes
Don’t know why that bothers me coming from another man but women are just as capable of being run by lesser emotions too. No offense, but that third line and the paragraph can apply to anyone, not just men. The Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory of Hungary being among the most noteworthy. And yes, let’s use the mistakes of the last century to judge the entirety of male rule through all of time. Totally reasonable and it’s not like men have ever done or made anything that benefited the species or attempt to make things better for women . Wonder how much hate this’ll get me for posting it in one of the worst possible places. Should be interesting. Getting goosebumps thinking about it. Gonna post before I change my mind.
Now, despite everything I just said right there there is one positive thing I wanted to say before I noticed the above comment.
ENN… I see what you did there Cohen. Got a good laugh out of it.
Not arguing the point that humans are a generally pathetic and asinine species, women are just as fucked up and disgusting as men. I was responding to the silly notion in the strip that society would collapse if men weren’t in charge. A notion held in the United States mostly by old white dudes who haven’t figured out that John Wayne is dead.
Those “mistakes of last century” still affect us to this day, as the last century wasn’t that long ago. And all those advancements in science and technology don’t change the fact those advancements were self-interest motivated. Man asks himself, “How can I make life better for me?” not “What would give the greatest benefit to those around me?” The creature known as man is not self-sacrificing or altruistic by nature, those are cultivated traits.
As for making life better for women…come on man. Look at the state of the world and how women are treated in some places. Do you seriously believe men would have even begun to make those efforts if women hadn’t pressured them?
Since it’s more a matter of opinion and the notion is indeed wrong, I won’t argue your first two paragraphs, though I will say we are also affected by the advancements of more than just the last century. If you truly believe that no invention or concept was made for the betterment of others, then you have a far more depressing view of the species than I.
I didn’t say anything about the efforts being made on their own. What I meant was that, at the most base level, when leaders are met with a vocal movement looking to change the social norm, race, gender and creed aside, there are two ways for them to react to that group. Listen and do something about it, or strike it down with a iron hammer and hope it goes away and never comes back, and that some leaders have taken the former approach to varying degrees. Short version is actually kind of like this storyline. Just because you complain doesn’t mean anyone is going to do anything about it, unless they want to do something about it.
“The creature known as man is not self-sacrificing or altruistic by nature, those are cultivated traits.”
Actually, a number of studies have suggested, in both humans and other closely-related Great Apes, that altruism and a sense of fairness are both instinctive to some degree in anybody with a normal (i.e. not abnormally-formed) brain. Yes, you have to raise a person right for it to not go askew (especially in regards to “fairness”, an instinct that can easily be warped into selfishness), but those ARE natural instincts, they ARE found in nature, and the reason is because it helps the species to survive if they can damn well cooperate and not consistently be dicks to each other.
It exists for the same reason murder is a crime in every society ever; because without such an instinct being in a majority of us, we would never have survived as a socially-oriented species and risen to the dominance we currently enjoy.
Sorry, I’m actually kinda planning to major in this kind of stuff, and have started taking all the early courses, so it jumps out at me when I see assumptions like “altruism doesn’t exist in nature”, when studies suggest it does. 😉 Studies that even a “noob” like myself to the field is aware of.
But…don’t men often do choose career over family? It’s a trope at this point that the dad spends so much time at his job that he becomes estranged to his wife and kids.
Oi, why must men like him be on TV?
Because RATINGS
Vitriol sells. . .so does hatred, anger, and so forth.

She does have superpowers! Most ordinary citizens could never walk away from a debate with someone that wrong…
Men *are* required to make a choice between family and career – they just don’t get craploads of opprobrium about which way they make the choice.
But…don’t men often do choose career over family? It’s a trope at this point that the dad spends so much time at his job that he becomes estranged to his wife and kids.
And she just ran off to punch the sh-t out of somthing…
“Note to self: Stop wasting time with supposed ‘liberal’ news media.”
