Nice, using the “Somalia is Libertarian paradise” strawmen. You damn sheep, you clearly know nothing about what libertarians stand for or you wouldn’t rely on such tired stereotypes. You are just a left-wing Limbaugh, and you’re not funny.
I’m curious about your use of the term “strawman.” How about if, instead of name-calling, you explain what you mean. What views did I attribute to libertarians that are not actual libertarian views? Is there something in what the Glibertarian says in this strip that a real-life libertarian would not say? Which statement of his is not actually a libertarian view?
Here’s the problem; it’s not that what he’s saying is wrong, but you’re taking the libertarian views to the far extreme and painting them as a blueprint for disaster. Yes, there were problems in the past like robber barons and lax labor laws, but times have changed and such situations would not happen again.
And seriously, Somalia is an example of anarchy, NOT libertarianism.
Exactly. I am (or rather, Gyno-Star is) taking a view to its far extreme. It’s a comedy device.
It would be a strawman if I were misrepresenting libertarian views. But I’m not saying that the extreme conclusion is what libertarians actually believe. The comic is not saying that Somalia is a libertarian paradise. Gyno-Star is saying that if you take the “least government” sentiment to its extreme, you get anarchy.
I well understand that libertarians don’t (think they) advocate anarchy. But if you take the simplistic concept that less government = better, and follow it to its conclusion, you get no government.
Well, here’s the problem I’m having. In taking the stereotypes to the extreme, you’re not so much making Gyno-star look uninformed, but just demonizing libertarians. I don’t know if this is a failure to get satire on my part or yours, but what you’re saying in the posts and the message in these comics don’t match up.
Do you get that Gyno-Star is being sarcastic when she says, “Like Somalia?” Neither she nor anybody else thinks that libertarians admire the anarchy of Somalia. She’s just making fun of the small government view by taking it to its logical extreme. Making fun – also knows as satirizing.
I don’t know what to tell you, man. Gyno-Star, this strip, and I are all in agreement that libertarian views are too simplistic. That’s the message of the strip, couched in a humorous way with a joke about Somalia.
I’m not entirely clear why someone who starts an argument by accusing someone of being a left-wing Limbaugh has a right to accuse their opponent of being disingenuous about their beliefs and arguing in bad faith.
Sometimes, I wonder what it’s like to not understand satire? If you can’t get subtext, no wonder people like Jim cling so tight to their beliefs, as if they were a Bible – any deviation from standard text must be a terrifying leap into the abyss.
Disagreements do not make a troll. But that is what I am seeing. You have a big disagreement, you must be a troll. Not correct. I like it that Jim disagrees. Even better when he gets passed the name calling and simplistic which is the problem with Libertarianism. It will not work in the real world the way it is portrayed on paper. Just won’t.
I’d like to test it though. But how can you do it without hurting people?
Child labor wasn’t a problem, it was the solution. Before the industrial revolution, children died in large numbers. With the industrial revolution, they lived. Production increased, so there was sufficient food for them, so the children lived. And the left will never forgive capitalism for the millions that survived.

I want to believe you, but I can’t tell if you’re just saying this to get me off your back and you actually believe what Gyno-Star is saying.

You may say it’s simplistic, but I still think it’s better than the bullshit that the GOP and the Democrats try to feed us.
I’m not entirely clear why someone who starts an argument by accusing someone of being a left-wing Limbaugh has a right to accuse their opponent of being disingenuous about their beliefs and arguing in bad faith.
Libertarianism is a recipe for disaster, you nincompoop.
You are a fool, Michael.

does jim come to this strip just to pick fights? you guys need to stop feeding the troll

If you want to have humor about the situation in Somali being libertarian, why not some humor about the Holodrome as representitive of socialism?
Oh it is because you think that socialism is good, despite it killing millions in the last century. Shame on you.
