I know this is suppose to be satire and I’m probably taking this way too seriously but I can’t help but ask. What if Sam made the personal decision herself to attempt to “change” her sexuality for religious reasons? Similar to how a nun makes the religious decision to remain chaste? Of course going to S.A.L.T would probably be the worst possible way to go about trying to do that but I’m just wondering what your personal opinion is.
I don’t think people can willfully change their own sexuality. Nuns and priests do not change their sexuality. They make the choice to be celibate as a demonstration of their devotion to God. There’s a difference between your sexuality, which is what you’re attracted to, and your behavior — how you respond to those feelings.
I don’t think they can either, that’s why I wrote “change.” I was mostly talking about seeking counseling to try and control the behavior. Like I’m sure even nuns have the desire to go out and have crazy sex, they just don’t act on it and they probably try to avoid thinking about stuff like that. I mainly ask because there are a few people in my church who “used to be gay” and some of them are even in healthy happy heterosexual marriages now. I thought what they did was kind of messed up at first but now I don’t really hold it against them because it was their decision and they seem pretty satisfied about it. They felt like their behavior was affecting their spiritually so they decided to change it. However I do think it’s wrong to try and convince queer individuals that they need to be “turned straight” in order to follow God.
Most of those “turned straight” didn’t stay that way and upon closer examination never really did change.
Evolution has more to do than simply have species survive by reproduction, it needs to have limits on that reproduction and non-reproductive sex is common among mammals and birds. Too many is as dangerous to extinction as too few. Nature is Balance.
