Episode 318: YAAAAAASSSS KWEEN
on July 27, 2015
and modified on August 4, 2023.
This subplot is about respectability politics. Read this long but very good piece about gay culture, if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
Those feathers need to be bigger, and longer!
Maybe they grow when he… um, nevermind.
Am I only dreaming?
And
BlazeThe Eternal Flame has embraced his inner… actually I don’t have the slightest idea what that is, but he’s obviously embraced it.Hmm, apparently I can’t use the HTML code for strikethrough text.
Well, let’s try these.
<s>Example</s>: Example
<del>Example</del>:
Example<strike>Example</strike>:
Example<span style="text-decoration: line-through;">Example</span>: Example
The difference between del and strike is that del is intended to be paired with ins to indicate changed text. Del marks what is removed; ins what is inserted. strike, on the other hand, is for indicating that the text is supposed to have a line through it. Browsers often render del’s text the same as stricken text, but this isn’t required. See https://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_del.asp

I can do it for you.
Thanks.
What else can be said, but… FABULOUS.
"Eternal" flame?
I’d say if his flame lasts 4 or more hours, he should consult a physician immediately.
…and suddenly i can’t help but think he just needs more muscle and an even crazier pose and he’d be a jojo character
At least his secret identity is still concealed. The rest of his “identity” is anything but that…
as Robin Williams said, pants so tight, you can tell what religion he is.
Release the cracken!!! … my ass… 😉
Obligatory “flaming gay” joke
But seriously this just awesome and the half-ass joke at the end was great 🙂
I’m not sure which is funnier…the comments or the strip. 🙂
Of course, the fun part is this also upends the normal trope of women’s costumes being almost nothing more than a bikini and some glitter 🙂
Wow, I never even looked at it that way! You’re totally right and that just makes it all the better 🙂
Oh, well said!
Wow, he makes Dazzler look conservative! But I don’t think those exposed midriff and chest area are functional. He’s just bound to get hurt.
Ehh, it’s not much of a trade-off compared to the spandex everyone else wears.
Hey, is it just me, or does Gyno-Star look younger today, particularly in the third panel? To me, she suddenly looks about 14, and I can’t figure out what the difference is. Unless her chin isn’t as sharp as it used to be…?
Yeah, she does have something of a teenager face in that panel.
face went from oval/egg shape to new panel with actual cheek bones
8 feathers in panel 4. 10 feathers in panel 5?
Different poses, though – could be that feathers 9 & 10 were hidden behind his head due to their being pushed back by his arms?
Either that, or he’s suffering from ShatnerCostumeItis?
If there was ever any doubt about blaze’s sexuality, it’s gone now. If there was ever any chance of him being able to continue his ” I’m not gay ” facade, it’s gone now. I’m happy he finally came to peace with his sexuality, yet he still doesn’t have give the impression that he sneezes glitter with his costume.
(( Not trying to be offensive, just saying. ))
This reminds me a little of the Creeper’s costume–the same flamboyance coupled with a lot of skin showing.
I just want to know how long you have been waiting to draw that costume.
Rebecca, I love you. GOD, the Eternal Flame! I still can’t say that without snickering myself into a coma. Just awesome. Nice, economical set up and delivery on the thing joke. Just hilarious.
DYAC. That was “thong joke,” goddamnit.
Dear god, a social justice superhero league. While I don’t agree with all the feminist points I am genuinely interested by the turn of this comic.
it is definitely entertaining.
Ok I can get a superhero team that consists of minorities. But a superhero team fighting social justice? I don’t think that the problems social justice tries to address can be solved by punching or fire.
Unless its just gonna be them fighting “super villains” who supposedly champion all societies ills. That concept will never work though as such villains will just end up as the most cliché strawmen on the planet and will just make the issues you try to address look like a joke.
So I take it you haven’t read much of this comic.
i cant wait to see how she will make a evil MRA supervilain tough
Heh, an MRA supervillain wouldn’t be so hard to make. He’d just have to be more powerful than those assholes who run amok and kill women because the blonde supermodel girls never were interested in them.
As the lady implied, kiddies, you should look at this comic’s last couple of story arcs. When the lady says she’s tackling social issues, she doesn’t necessarily mean literally. This most recent arc shows Gynostar dealing with work-place discrimination for anyone not white, male, and straight. The previous arc had her battling a personification of the male gaze and, with the assistance of Dave Barrack, the ridiculous objectification of women in comics.
so if a gay man chose to wear incredibly revealing clothing it is not objectification? so why it is the case when it is a women?
should we acuse miss Cohen of objectification of gays? cause i don’t think that i would see one this “colorful” even at a gay pride parade
Have you been to many gay pride parades?
That’s it! That’s not a superhero costume. That is the main showing on a parade float. Well spotted, papineaud134.
Finally binged the whole archive! I like it! There was a comment a while back about GS never meeting a straight white male that wasn’t at least kind of a jackass in some form that I agreed with, but it’s a fairly minor point, and honestly, it probably WOULDN’T add a whole lot to the humor or story. It’d be nice to see that they exist in GS’s universe, but meh.
The humor and artwork are quite good, and I really enjoy what you’ve done, Rebecca! It’s also made me think about my own internal judgments and ism ism isms, to quote a man, so ya know. Self-awareness and all. Neat-o
I received an e-mail by one Rebecca Cohen, which has the looks of a spam mail. (Didn’t open it for this reason) Could this be related to your account? Could be just a spambot using that name, I assume it’s common, but maybe you want to check whether your account got hacked.
Thanks for letting me know. I don’t believe my account has been hacked, but other folks have received emails with my name designed to appear as though they came from my account.
It is apparently easy to forge a return address in email. It helps to have control over your own SMTP daemon.
Wow! 26 tracking websites for viewers of this comic!
L’Shanah Tovah!
Is the comic on hiatus?
Shanah Tovah! New comic will be posted on Monday. Sorry for the long wait!
That’s all right, Rebecca. We still love you.
LOVE this! Oh, SNAP!
He’s The Eternal Flame, Baby!
